Day Five:

Welcome to the Game Yard here at Castle Writemore.  This is a huge, green field in the center of the castle, surrounded by sturdy stone walls.  This is where we play all of our games and sports.  Sometimes we play well known games such as football, hide and seek, or quidditch.  And sometimes we make up our own games.

Have you ever made up your own game?  Try to do it now.  In your journal, describe how to play your game. You can also make a list of the rules.

Teacher Tips...

Goal: Invent a game. Describe how to play.

This prompt is an example of how the writing process can be very active. Many learners (and teachers) might think that one must be sitting at all times to write. However, we Write-Knights know that we can be generating ideas while being very active.

When coming up with a brand-new game, Learners may want to play outside, play with toys, interact with others. They should experiment. They should have fun. During this brainstorming/play phase, they might come up with a great idea for a game. Help them talk about the point of the game. Discuss possible rules. What works? What doesn't? What makes this game fun?

Then, after the ideas have been generated, the writing / recording phase can begin.

The process sometimes works this way: Experience first. Write second.
